Here, I’ll Show You How began with a simple idea. Children learn an enormous amount from the adults who take the time to include them, answer their questions, let them try, and sometimes let them fail. Many of the lessons that shape a young person never appear on a school syllabus.
Ten-year-old Teddy Johnson begins his story wondering why his best friend seems to know practical things that he does not. That question leads him to his elderly neighbor, Art Bennett, and eventually to a much larger circle of people who each have something different to teach him. His father, who lives several states away, remains an important part of Teddy’s life, while Teddy also discovers that learning from another good man does not diminish that relationship.
What begins with tools gradually becomes a story about responsibility, humility, service, patience, listening, and knowing when to ask for help. Teddy learns from men and women, from family members and neighbors, and from people whose professions and experiences are very different from one another. Eventually, he reaches the point every good mentor hopes for. He is ready to stand beside someone younger and say, “Here, I’ll show you how.”
The book was written especially with middle-grade boys in mind, but its message is broader than that audience. It is also a story for parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, mentors, neighbors, and everyone else who understands that sometimes a few patient minutes spent teaching a child can matter for years.
